What to Wear for Senior Photos | Stillwater & Twin Cities Style Guide

One of the first questions I hear from almost every senior (and parent!) is:

“What should I wear?”

I get it! Standing in front of your closet trying to decide what to wear for photos can feel surprisingly overwhelming. You want to look your best, but you also want your photos to actually look and feel like you!

The good news? You don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe or chase the latest trends. The best senior photos happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and free to be yourself.

That’s one of the reasons we spend time planning your session before you ever step in front of the camera. We’ll talk through outfit ideas, locations, and the overall look you’re going for so you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

Here are a few things I encourage every senior to keep in mind when planning what to wear.

Wear What Feels Like You

Your senior photos should reflect you.

Whether your style is athletic, trendy, laid-back, classic, or somewhere in between, choose outfits that feel comfortable and true to you. If you never wear dresses or a suit, don’t feel like you have to wear one just because it’s your senior session. If your favorite pair of boots are part of your everyday style, let’s incorporate them!

The goal isn’t to wear the “perfect” outfit – it’s to wear something that you genuinely love, makes you feel great, and makes you feel like yourself.

Choose Colors That Let YOU Shine

In general, solid colors and subtle patterns tend to photograph the best. Earth tones, rich blues, greens, burgundy, and other muted colors usually create a timeless look, while large logos, neon colors, or busy patterns can sometimes distract from the most important part of the image – you!

Remember, the goal isn’t for someone to notice your outfit first. It’s for them to notice you! The right clothing supports the images without stealing the spotlight, allowing your personality to shine through naturally.

Think About Variety

There’s no magic number of outfits to bring for your senior session. Some seniors bring three, others bring five – it depends on the session we’ve planned.

Rather than focusing on the number of outfits, think about creating variety. You might choose one casual outfit, one that’s a little dressier, and another that reflects one of your hobbies, interests, or personality.

During your planning consultation, we’ll go through your outfits together and narrow them down to the best ones so every outfit has a purpose.

Let Your Locations Inspire Your Wardrobe

Your clothing and location should complement each other.

A flowy dress might feel right at home in a field of tall grasses, while jeans and a cozy sweater may fit beautifully in downtown Stillwater. Planning a more urban session in Minneapolis or St. Paul? You might lean toward something a little more structured and modern.

The goal isn’t to match your surroundings perfectly – it’s simply to create a look that feels cohesive and authentic.

Make Sure Everything Fits Well

Try on every outfit before your session. Make sure everything fits the way you want it to and that you can comfortably sit, stand, walk, and move around.

If you’re constantly tugging at your shirt, adjusting a strap, or feeling restricted by your clothing it will be much harder to relax and enjoy your session – and that often shows in your photos.

The more comfortable you feel in what you’re wearing, the more natural and confident you’ll look in your images.

Don’t Forget the Details

Once you’ve chosen your outfits, take a few minutes to think about the finishing touches.

Shoes, jewelry, jackets, hats and other accessories can add personality and variety to your images. Even something as simple as changing your shoes or adding a favorite denim jacket can completely change the look and feel of an outfit.

The little details often make your images feel even more personal.

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, but that’s why we plan together. My goal is to help you feel comfortable and relaxed so your personality shines through in every image.

Before your session, we’ll talk through your ideas, locations, and wardrobe so that when your session day arrives, you don’t have to worry about what to wear. You can simply enjoy the experience.

Because the best senior photos aren’t about wearing the perfect outfit.

They’re about feeling comfortable enough to simply be yourself.
