If you’ve ever looked through my family gallery and wondered why so many sessions seem to glow, there’s a reason for that.
One of my favorite times for family sessions is during golden hour, the hour just before the sun sets. The light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering, but more importantly, it creates an atmosphere where families can simply relax and enjoy being together.
And that’s what I want your session to be.
Family photos aren’t about getting everyone to smile perfectly at the camera. They’re about preserving this season of life exactly as it feels right now. The giggles from your toddler. The way our child still reaches for your hand. The quiet moments between siblings that happen when no one realizes I’m taking a photo.
Golden hour gives us the space to slow down.
Instead of harsh sunlight and rushed poses, we can wander through a beautiful location, let your kids explore, and capture genuine moments as they unfold naturally. Some of my favorite images happen in between the “official” poses, when someone tells a joke, a little one starts twirling, or everyone bursts into laughter for no reason at all.
One of the questions I hear most often is, “What if my kids don’t cooperate?“

The truth is, they don’t have to.
I don’t expect children to stand perfectly still or smile on command. My sessions are designed to be relaxed and interactive because that’s when authentic moments happen. Your children get to be themselves, and I guide you through the experience so it never feels stressful or forced.
Whether we’re photographing your family in Stillwater, somewhere else in the Twin Cities, or during one of my Florida or Colorado trips, the goal is always the same: to create photographs that feel like your family.
Years from now, I don’t want you to remember the outfits you wore or whether everyone’s hair stayed perfectly in place. I want you to look back at your gallery and remember the feeling of this stage of life.
That’s the magic of a golden hour family session.
