5 Tips to Finding your Perfect Wedding Photographer

Finding the perfect wedding photographer is a challenge a lot of brides face. Just googling “Denver Wedding Photographer” brings up over 1,400,000 choices – each one has their own look, their own line of products they offer, and of course their own price point.  Here’s some helpful tips to wading through the huge list of photographers and finding your perfect one.

1) CHECK OUT THEIR STYLE AND AESTHETIC: The first, and most important, step is finding a photographer who’s images you love. When browsing websites, pay attention to the photographer’s style and aesthetic. Does it suit the style of photography you have in mind? Are you looking for someone who has had a documentary style or perhaps a photographer with more of a fashion forward look? Bookmark photographers whose images and style you are drawn to, then reach out to them to schedule a consultation.

2) MEET YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER: Whether it’s in person or via a Skype call, it’s a great idea to meet with a potential photographer before booking. This gives you a chance to see if your personalities mesh well. Being comfortable with and around your photographer is key to getting beautiful, natural looking wedding day images. Not to mention typically you spend a large chunk of your wedding day with your photographer – make sure it’s someone you’d like to spend time with!

3) ASK TO SEE THEIR WORK: When you meet with your photographer, ask to see their work and more specifically, a full wedding. This will give you some insight into how they approach the wedding day, if they are well versed in photographing in a variety of lighting situations, and a real indication of whether their style is right for you.

4) ASK QUESTIONS: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Say, for example, you are getting married outdoors at a venue with a beautiful garden. Ask the photographer if they have other suggestions of where to have photographs taken if it happens to rain on the day. If they can’t come up with a contingency plan or suggestions, then they might not be the photographer for you! Again, it’s all about getting to know each other and being comfortable with your photographer.

5) EVALUATE THEIR VALUE AND PRICING: Professional wedding photography is truly an investment. Out of all the things you buy for your wedding day, photography is often times the one purchase that you will be able to enjoy for many years to come. A lot of brides get sticker shock when they start asking about a photographer’s pricing but know that most times their pricing is in line with the service they offer. A professional wedding photographer puts a lot of time into building the relationship with you before, during and after your wedding. They are there to make sure everything is captured beautifully, get the images you have been dreaming of, and making sure it all happens with the least amount of stress possible. After the wedding day they spend time editing the images to make sure they look amazing and helping you design beautiful pieces of artwork for your home. A professional photographer is so much more than just a person that shows up for 8 hours on your wedding day.

I hope these tips are useful in narrowing down your options for a wedding photographer. Just remember that there are a lot of us out there, with different styles and price points. But I urge you to look past the numbers and make sure you are hiring a photographer that fits the style you are looking for and that you have a connection with. Happy Planning!
