Iowa Children’s Portrait Photography | Ava’s 3 month session (guest starring Logan!)

One nice thing about having a big family is that it usually grows quickly when everyone starts having babies! First my cousin Eric and his wife Rachel had baby Logan, then about 6 months later my sister had Quincy, followed by Ava and Laila born to two more of my cousins on my dad’s side. (Needless to say, Christmas will be CRAZY this year with all the new babies together!) And I’m so blessed to be a photographer and be able to capture the milestones of all these little ones! A couple weekends ago, another one of my cousins, Amanda, got married (blog post yet to come from the wedding day!) so Stacy and Ava came from Chicago while Eric, Rachel, Logan and the grandparents came from the Sioux Center area. Since we had everyone in one place, we decided we’d do Ava’s 3 month session and try for some group photos. Well let’s just say that getting an active 10 month old (Logan) and a 3 month old in one photo can be quite a challenge! We didn’t get many photos of them together but we did get some great shots of Logan by himself along with a group photo with Grandma & Grandpa! After that we switched gears and focused all the attention on baby Ava. She had some of the CUTEST outfits (the green one is my favorite!) and is so laid back that we could even get her on her tummy without a fuss. AND we learned that she can hold herself up pretty well which created the best photos from the session, in my opinion. She’s such a little doll and I can’t wait to photograph her as she gets bigger! Twin Cities Family Portrait Photography | Amy Lynn’s family session

I am always amazed at the power of the internet! I mean, what a great marketing tool…you can reach people all over the world, you never know who will land on your site and fall in love with your photography. For instance, I got a call the other day from Amy Lynn, owner of Les Amis photography down in Louisiana. She is originally from the Stillwater area was planning a trip up to see her family and wanted to do a family session. She had done a search for photographers in Stillwater and found little ‘ole me Of course, being a photographer, she could do the session herself for the most part but she wanted the experience that most of us photographers don’t get…being on the other side of the camera, experience the photo session like a regular client and not having to edit the photos herself. She fell in love with my work and luckily I had some openings for the weekend her and her son would be home. I felt so honored that another photographer wanted to use me as their family photographer!!! (I’m STILL pumped about it if you couldn’t tell )

We had a very small window of opportunity to do the session and the weather started to worry us. Luckily the skies were just overcast and the rain held out long enough for us to do our session. Amy Lynn knew she wanted some fairly more traditional family photos with her parents and then some that were more photojournalistic with her and her son. Oh I had so much fun! What a great family and her son is SO adorable!!! I absolutely love all the images from this session Here are just a few, with more on my Facebook page and soon to be on my website!

Iowa Portrait Photography | Quincy Jane’s 3 month session

I can hardly believe it’s been three months since little Quincy joined our family. My how time flies! She’s getting so big and full of expressions! It wasn’t long into the session before Quincy had her first baby meltdown of the day (being a model is HARD work!) so I set up my laptop, hooked up my hard drive and put on some soothing Kenny G music which usually calms babies down. However, Grandma informed me that even at the early age of 3 months, Quincy has a very particular taste in music and preferred a little Lady Gaga over Kenny G. I didn’t believe her so, to prove her wrong, I turned on some Lady Gaga, thinking that Quincy would continue to have her meltdown, thus postponing the session until she calmed down. Oh but how I was wrong! Grandma quickly picked up little Quincy, snuggled her tight and started bouncing her to the music and surprisingly Quincy calmed right down! Who knew Lady Gaga was the new thing in children’s music! HA! So for the rest of the session, we played some of Quincy’s favorite songs like “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” and “Telephone.” Good call Grandma!

These are some of my favorite shots from the session, including a 9-up wall collage that I’m going to talk my sister into hanging in the nursery…WAY to cute NOT to! I learned some new tricks at After Dark, a photo conference I attended last week in Minneapolis, that I want to try out on Quincy the next time I’m in Iowa. I love having a little model of my very own!

Twin Cities Portrait Photography | Kendra & Jake’s Engagement Session in downtown Minneapolis

Kendra, one of my fantastic cousins, and her fiance, Jake, drove up from Iowa on Sunday to do engagement photos. They could have done it down in Iowa during one of my many trips back home this summer but they wanted to do something completely different – so of course I suggested they come up and do the session here in the Twin Cities. We had a blast! First we started out at St. Anthony Main, wandered some of the paths by the river and got some great “nature” type shots. I must say that Kendra is a trooper because the paths we were on pretty rough and uneven…not really conducive to walking with heals on but she didn’t care at all. After changing into their second outfit (which I LOVED because the colors were so fantastic!) we had the opportunity to go on one of the rooftops and get some photos with the skyline in the background. Pretty sure these are my FAVORITE photos because the combination of location and clothing was amazing!!! Not to mention how many people from Iowa can say they’ve been on top of a building in downtown Minneapolis during their photo session! We finished up the session at The Guthrie. I just love how natural these guys are in front of the camera and how crazy Jake can be. When we first started out the session he said he had left his smile back home in Waverly so there would be no smiling photos (joking of course!) and then throughout the session he would make crazy faces or do something hilarious knowing darn well that I couldn’t possibly get my camera ready in time to grab the photo. I can tell their wedding this October is going to be a blast! Thanks guys for coming up to the Cities for your session! I had a blast! Twin Cities Portrait Photography | Mike & Heather’s engagement session at Minnehaha Falls

My friend Lori, a wedding planner and one of the owners of veiled events in Woodbury, got me in touch with Mike & Heather. They are getting married this coming October and were in need of a fabulous photographer to photograph their special day (….that’s where I come in ). So we met at the studio, showed them all my cool products and images, signed a contract and booked a date for their engagement session!

With my engagement sessions I like to take the couple to a fun location outside of the studio. This is our chance to play around, get some fun images and get to know one another. I knew right off the bat that Heather and Mike were not the back alley/grunge type of a couple but more of the relaxed/nature setting type. I knew I wanted to take them somewhere different, somewhere I had never been before and instantly thought of the Minnehaha Falls Park in Minneapolis. I had seen some amazing photos taken there and decided the green grass and trees would make for some excellent backdrops for the couple. We had everything planned out – Mike would come up from Iowa for the weekend (like he does most weekends….now THAT’s LOVE!) and we would go out on Saturday morning for the session. But of course, Mother Nature had to rain on our parade…it was SUPER cold and rainy all day! But never fear – Sunday turned out to be an amazing day with sun shining and temps almost back to normal!

I had such a blast wandering around Minnehaha Falls Park with Mike and Heather, exploring the new location and creating some intimate portraits of the couple. I can’t wait until their wedding day!!! Twin Cities Senior Portrait Photography | Alex’s Senior Model Session

I am getting super excited for senior season to get into full swing. These past couple of weeks that I have photographed my senior models, has really gotten me in the groove again. I’m constantly online searching for new backgrounds and props the seniors would love, honing my photographic skill and experimenting with new lighting in studio, and designing some killer grad cards for this year’s graduating seniors. The creativity is really flowing! So I was super excited when Alex came in for her senior modeling session. I had photographed Alex before (last year we did a modeling session to create new head shots to submit to local agencies) and so I knew she was very relaxed behind the camera and I would be able to play around. My makeup artist, Jody from Makeup Savvy here in Stillwater, created three different looks and Alex just KILLED the session. I couldn’t believe the fantastic shots we got! Twin Cities Senior Portrait Photography | Shelby’s Senior Model Session

Last year I got to photograph the fabulous Shelby while doing some promo shots for Karma Clothing Co., a local consignment shop specializing in name brand clothing. I had such a blast with her that I knew I’d HAVE to have her as a Senior Model this year, when she’s going to be a senior. So you can imagine my excitement when she applied to be a Senior Model and came in for her model session. Jody, my makeup artists extraordinaire, and I worked with the fantastic outfits that Shelby brought, tried out some different backgrounds, and created some fantastic looks for her model cards. These are just a few of my favorites…she really rocked the session and it was hard for me to pick just a couple photos to share…but here they are! (More on my facebook page if you want to see them).

Twin Cities Senior Photography | Ashley’s Senior Model Session

Well it’s about that time of year again – SENIOR SEASON! I can’t tell you how excited I am to get back in the studio, meet these fantastic seniors and create some amazing portraits that they can’t wait to show their friends. This year, in order to help spread the word about my studio, I’m finding soon-to-be high school seniors to be Senior Models and help get my name into the schools. So without further ado…here is Ashley! She’s going to be a senior at Woodbury High School next year and we met through her mom Lori who is a wedding planner (her company is called Veiled Events – you should really check her out if you’re in need of an awesome wedding planner!) Anyways, back to Ashley, she came into the studio last week for her model session. One of the perks to being a Senior Model is not only do you get a free session out of the deal but you get your makeup professionally done by the great Jody Olson of Makeup Savvy here in Stillwater. We played around with a couple different looks, tried out some new lighting and backgrounds and had a blast! This was a great kick off to my super fun senior season. Can’t wait for it to get into full swing!
