I am getting super excited for senior season to get into full swing. These past couple of weeks that I have photographed my senior models, has really gotten me in the groove again. I’m constantly online searching for new backgrounds and props the seniors would love, honing my photographic skill and experimenting with new lighting in studio, and designing some killer grad cards for this year’s graduating seniors. The creativity is really flowing! So I was super excited when Alex came in for her senior modeling session. I had photographed Alex before (last year we did a modeling session to create new head shots to submit to local agencies) and so I knew she was very relaxed behind the camera and I would be able to play around. My makeup artist, Jody from Makeup Savvy here in Stillwater, created three different looks and Alex just KILLED the session. I couldn’t believe the fantastic shots we got! Last year I got to photograph the fabulous Shelby while doing some promo shots for Karma Clothing Co., a local consignment shop specializing in name brand clothing. I had such a blast with her that I knew I’d HAVE to have her as a Senior Model this year, when she’s going to be a senior. So you can imagine my excitement when she applied to be a Senior Model and came in for her model session. Jody, my makeup artists extraordinaire, and I worked with the fantastic outfits that Shelby brought, tried out some different backgrounds, and created some fantastic looks for her model cards. These are just a few of my favorites…she really rocked the session and it was hard for me to pick just a couple photos to share…but here they are! (More on my facebook page if you want to see them).

Twin Cities Senior Photography | Ashley’s Senior Model Session

Well it’s about that time of year again – SENIOR SEASON! I can’t tell you how excited I am to get back in the studio, meet these fantastic seniors and create some amazing portraits that they can’t wait to show their friends. This year, in order to help spread the word about my studio, I’m finding soon-to-be high school seniors to be Senior Models and help get my name into the schools. So without further ado…here is Ashley! She’s going to be a senior at Woodbury High School next year and we met through her mom Lori who is a wedding planner (her company is called Veiled Events – you should really check her out if you’re in need of an awesome wedding planner!) Anyways, back to Ashley, she came into the studio last week for her model session. One of the perks to being a Senior Model is not only do you get a free session out of the deal but you get your makeup professionally done by the great Jody Olson of Makeup Savvy here in Stillwater. We played around with a couple different looks, tried out some new lighting and backgrounds and had a blast! This was a great kick off to my super fun senior season. Can’t wait for it to get into full swing!

A lot of people have the misconception that downtown Stillwater is just a bunch of antique stores and there’s nothing interesting off the beaten path. Those people are SO wrong! If you take the time to explore downtown you’ll find a lot of specialty stores as well as art galleries. And if you wander off Main Street you’ll find some fantastic stores as well. One of the newest art galleries is just up Chestnut Street East and is located in a fantastic little place known as the Compass Center for Healing (used to be the Stillwater Music store). I was introduced to Thea, the owner of The Little Parrot Art Sanctuary, when I attended a Chamber ribbon cutting at the Compass Center a couple months ago. Since the Compass Center is newer, they were in need of some photography to showcase on their website – that’s where I come in

This gallery is unlike any others that I have been in, with it’s brightly colored walls, eclectic mix of pieces and the soothing soundtrack that is played in the background. Just a couple minutes into the session and I was completely relaxed! I wandered around the gallery, photographing the space and the pieces, being inspired by all the bright colors. I highly recommend that everyone stop into The Little Parrot Art Sanctuary the next time you’re in town and check out all the fabulous things Thea has for sale!

Owning a photography studio means you get to meet a variety of people and do a variety of sessions. No two days are ever the same. It’s fun to go from season to season – photographing high school seniors in the summer then switching gears to family sessions in the fall and then doing more commercial session in the winter. Seems like ever since the new year started people and businesses have started thinking about updating websites and business cards with new photos. This session was just a LITTLE bit different.

Matthew and I met back in college at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Being art majors (my focus was in photography and advertising while he did more graphic and fine arts) our paths crossed once or twice in various classes. When Matthew decided to expand his art career and start approaching galleries here in the Cities in hopes of displaying his Andy Warhol-esque pieces in their shows he knew he would need some professional photography done. So to help kick off his self promotion, he packed up some of his favorite pieces and brought them up to my studio to get some photos of him and the artwork. He also found a company that will help him sell replications of his artwork online so he was in need of high resolution files of each of the pieces to submit. So we started out at my studio photographing each painting and then we headed just down the street to a great empty space I had found here in Stillwater to finish up the session. We had decided that since the artwork was very clean and contrasty on its own, we wanted a space that had clean white walls to really make the artwork stand out and be a focus in each of the images. This space worked perfect!

Iowa Maternity Session | Coming soon: Baby Watts!

While I was back home in Iowa for the holidays, I decided it would be the perfect time to do my little sister’s maternity session since she is about 8 months pregnant. So I packed up all my studio lights and backgrounds and hauled them to Clarion. I had a blast doing the session! She so cute pregnant! We did a couple different outfits and backgrounds, some more artistic than the others. I wanted a good variety to put in the First Year Album I’ll be doing for Baby Watts as well as some nice portraits she could hang in the nursery or around the house. We couldn’t talk her husband into being in the photos with her (he’s usually not the first one to volunteer for such things!) but we did get a couple cameos by Maddi, the pup.

Well it’s officially here….the year of 2010. Not quite sure how 2009 managed to slip by so fast, but it did! Seems like just yesterday I was filling out the paper work and getting ready to start my business – and now here we are, almost a year later. I want to thank all my wonderful clients and blog followers for making my first year in business a success. I am truly looking forward to the upcoming year and what it all has in store for the studio. I’m currently working on updating the website with new images and information (and maybe even a new look…we shall see!), working on new, unique products to offer my clients, and also taking time to learn new techniques to improve my photography. Jennifer is the sister of one of my senior clients this past summer. She decided my Limited Edition Holiday Session offer was the perfect excuse to come in for a family photo with her two little ones. The biggest challenge of the session was getting little two year old Riley to sit still long enough to get a photo with older sister Savannah. As soon as we figured out to give her the candy bracelet and con her into “hiding” it from me, I was able to capture lots of smiles. Photographing kids can be so much fun!

I met Judy at one of the monthly Chamber mixers. We chatted a little bit about business (she’s a realtor with Edina Realty) and I told her about the awesome Limited Edition Holiday Sessions I was doing this month at the studio. She thought the short 30 minute session and holiday card deal was a great idea so she talked her kids into it and they came to the studio last week for the session. It was a fairly nice, November day with great lighting provided by the overcast skies. We hit up an alley way in downtown Stillwater for an urban feel then headed down by the river to capture some more casual shots with the bridge and what was left of the fall color. I had so much fun doing the session and got lots of great shots for their holiday cards!
