I am proud to announce the launch of the 2012 Adorable National Children’s Portrait Contest at the studio! This is my second year of doing this contest and I’m so excited start photographing cute kids everywhere! High School Senior Portrait Photography | Maxx’s Class of 2012 Senior Model Session

Every year I try and pick out a couple soon-to-be seniors who would be great at promoting my studio and make them my Senior Models for the year. Their job is to help get my studio name out to their classmates, tell them about the super cool things I do to make each senior session special, and persuade others to come book with me by offering special discounts that they can only get from a Senior Model. Since I was a little bit in limbo at the beginning of the year, I didn’t have the chance to really hit up the Cedar Rapids area for Senior Models like I had hoped, but did get in with the seniors back in my hometown of Clarion. That’s where Maxx comes in – my Senior Model for the year One of the perks to being a Senior Model is not only do you get really creative senior portraits, you also get a model session earlier in the spring when you are still a junior. The purpose of this session is to create images for the marketing and promotional materials that are used to help spread the studio name around. Iowa Portrait Photography | Expecting

I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful Angela during her pregnancy. She wanted to do some fun, creative shots to document her second pregnancy and she even talked her husband into coming with! They are such a cute couple and make such cute babies – can’t wait to meet the newest addition to their family.

I can hardly believe that I have photographed this little guy for a year now! It all started with his newborn session, and now, here we are, celebrating his one year milestone with a super fun kid’s session complete with a cake smash! It has been such a great year watching this little guy grow up and develop an awesome personality. Pretty sure there hasn’t been one session where he wasn’t smiling and hamming it up for the camera. LOVE it! Can’t wait to photograph his second year

Children’s Portrait Photography | Ava Turns 1

Last year was the first year children’s photography started to be a big part of my business and I’ve loved every minute of it! Ava is my cousin’s daughter and they live in Illinois, around Chicago – so needless to say I do not get to see her that often. But I did have the opportunity to photograph her when she was just 3 months old, and now she’s a year! My how time flies! It worked out perfectly, they came to Iowa for a wedding and so we were able to photograph little Ava’s 1 year session at the same time. When we started the session, she was very shy and didn’t quite know what to think about all the large equipment and the new place she was in. But by the end she was showing off her cheerleading moves and smashing a cake with a big smile on her face.

Iowa Wedding Photography | Heidi & Joe tie the knot in Des Moines

This year is a big wedding season for me; with 13 weddings on the books it’s my biggest year yet. Lots of weddings means and early kick off to the wedding season with Heidi & Joe’s early April wedding. At first I was a little afraid of what the weather would be like on April 2nd in Iowa but we really lucked out with fantastic weather. How often is it 70 degrees.. in Iowa.. in APRIL! We started out the day at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Jordan Creek with getting ready shots of Heidi. The hotel room had beautiful light – perfect for the detail shots as well as her getting her dress on. The hotel is attached to a Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, providing the perfect location for the first look as well as some fun photos of Heidi and Joe. Their ceremony was small and intimate with just immediate family members – actually the whole day was very relaxed and low key. Love those! These are just a few of my favorite images from their big day. And if you’re looking for a fabulous place to eat in West Des Moines, make sure you check out Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse – AMAZING food!

Iowa Children’s Portrait Photography | Quincy Jane turns one!

For those of you who follow my blog and facebook page regularly, you are acquainted with Miss Quincy Jane already. She’s my adorable little niece that just turned one in February. I don’t know where time goes but I swear we just did her newborn session yesterday! I had just purchased some new backgrounds, flooring and tutus so we got to go all out and try out some new looks. Check out that tutu, isn’t it the cutest? Then we ended the session on a messy note with a cake smash but it was sure worth it!

Little Miss Ella is quite the character. She has the biggest personality EVER and you never know what she’s going to do next. When she came in for her 1 year session, she was all full of smiles and giggles. I knew it was going to be a fun day! I had a hard time narrowing down my favorites from Ella’s session. We captured so many different faces and smiles that this little blog post doesn’t do the session justice! Can’t wait to photograph her again

Iowa Children’s Portrait Photography | My first ADORABLE kid sessions

This is my first year of participating in the Adorable National Children’s contest put on by my lab and I can’t tell you how excited I am. This past week I’ve had my first couple of children’s sessions for it (you can see the first two with the past couple of blog posts) and this weekend I had a chance to photograph two more little ones.

First up we have Parker, the son of one of my best friends from college. He is such a cutie, but he’s too smart for his own good. He knows that when the camera comes out he’ll be expected to smile, so of course he does the opposite. And he’s already learning how to get what he wants – during the session we’d try to put him down on the ground, he’d cry and fuss, then as soon as mom would pick him up he’d have the biggest smile on his face (until the camera came out that is). But never fear! Daddy came to the rescue and we got some awesome smiles out of little Parker.

Also this weekend I got to meet Carter, an energetic 3 year old. At first he didn’t know what to think of the studio set up but after a few minutes he started to loosen up and show me his true, crazy colors. I love how unexpected children’s sessions can be. You never know what will happen and it definitely keeps you on your toes as a photographer. I love interacting with the little ones and acting all crazy to get them to give me big genuine smiles. These are just a few of my favorites from Carter’s session. I absolutely love the last one!
