So pretty sure that I’ve found my floral designer who will be designing my wedding day flowers and her name is Danielle with Studio Fleurette in Stillwater. This is my second photo session that I have done of her flower arrangements and they are just fantastic! The flowers she uses and the colors she puts together are just stunning. Not to mention I love all the little details she puts into the design like the decorative pins she attaches to the ribbon on the stems or the metal wire she uses on the boutonnieres (which I absolutely LOVE by the way!). I know that no matter what I dream up in my head for my wedding day flowers, Danielle’s design will completely surpass my expectations. Now that I’ve got my floral designer, all I need to find now is a groom!

One of the things I love about weddings is capturing the detail shots of the flowers, especially when they are beautiful designs by people like Danielle Erickson of Studio Fleurette in Stillwater. Danielle is in the process of setting up her website for her floral design company and knows the importance of professional photography on websites. So she wanted me to come to a wedding she had done the floral designs and do some creative shots for the website. It was so much fun! It’s kind of nice not having to worry about the entire wedding day and just be able to do some fun, creative detail shots. The wedding was being held at their family farm which had some great, rustic details like a woodpile and the traditional barbed wire fence. I LOVE mixing elegant with rustic and then throwing in some vintage post processing to create some very contemporary images. Here’s just a few of my favorite, check out more on my Facebook Page Gallery.

A lot of people have the misconception that downtown Stillwater is just a bunch of antique stores and there’s nothing interesting off the beaten path. Those people are SO wrong! If you take the time to explore downtown you’ll find a lot of specialty stores as well as art galleries. And if you wander off Main Street you’ll find some fantastic stores as well. One of the newest art galleries is just up Chestnut Street East and is located in a fantastic little place known as the Compass Center for Healing (used to be the Stillwater Music store). I was introduced to Thea, the owner of The Little Parrot Art Sanctuary, when I attended a Chamber ribbon cutting at the Compass Center a couple months ago. Since the Compass Center is newer, they were in need of some photography to showcase on their website – that’s where I come in
This gallery is unlike any others that I have been in, with it’s brightly colored walls, eclectic mix of pieces and the soothing soundtrack that is played in the background. Just a couple minutes into the session and I was completely relaxed! I wandered around the gallery, photographing the space and the pieces, being inspired by all the bright colors. I highly recommend that everyone stop into The Little Parrot Art Sanctuary the next time you’re in town and check out all the fabulous things Thea has for sale!

Iowa Commercial Photography | Braunschweig Pottery
January 29, 2010Some days product photography is my favorite thing to do. It’s a lot easier than chasing a small child around the studio with a camera trying to make them smile! And once I get the lighting just right (which sometimes can be a little tricky) it’s fairly easy because, again, the products don’t more after I put them in place. So when my friend, Jim, from Morningside called and said he was in need of photos of his mom’s pottery for her new website he was designing, I jumped at the chance to photograph some inanimate objects and catch up with an old friend.
Until I got to Connie’s studio just outside of Alta, Iowa (can you say ROADTRIP!) I had no concept of how beautiful the pieces were going to be. They were amazing! She’s got quite the collection of pieces ranging from plates and bowls to lamps and angel statuettes. And, little did I know, that this is more than just Connie’s passion, but it’s also her husband Jerry’s as well. They’ve been making pottery pieces and selling them at art shows for years. I absolutely love the rich colors they use and the detail they put in to each piece that is made.
These are just a few of my favorite images and just a few of what the Braunschweig’s have to offer. Definitely check out their website to see more and to see what shows they are going to be at (don’t worry Minnesotans – I’m sure they’ll be doing some shows up here in the Cities this year as well!)
Owning a photography studio means you get to meet a variety of people and do a variety of sessions. No two days are ever the same. It’s fun to go from season to season – photographing high school seniors in the summer then switching gears to family sessions in the fall and then doing more commercial session in the winter. Seems like ever since the new year started people and businesses have started thinking about updating websites and business cards with new photos. This session was just a LITTLE bit different.
Matthew and I met back in college at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Being art majors (my focus was in photography and advertising while he did more graphic and fine arts) our paths crossed once or twice in various classes. When Matthew decided to expand his art career and start approaching galleries here in the Cities in hopes of displaying his Andy Warhol-esque pieces in their shows he knew he would need some professional photography done. So to help kick off his self promotion, he packed up some of his favorite pieces and brought them up to my studio to get some photos of him and the artwork. He also found a company that will help him sell replications of his artwork online so he was in need of high resolution files of each of the pieces to submit. So we started out at my studio photographing each painting and then we headed just down the street to a great empty space I had found here in Stillwater to finish up the session. We had decided that since the artwork was very clean and contrasty on its own, we wanted a space that had clean white walls to really make the artwork stand out and be a focus in each of the images. This space worked perfect!
These are just a few of my favorite images from the session, more are posted on my Facebook page. If you’d like to see more of Matthew’s paintings and graphic design work, check out his website. And definitely make sure you contact him if you want to purchase any of his amazing artwork!
Twin Cities Commercial Photography | St. Croix Music
November 11, 2009A couple weeks ago, I photographed the ribbon cutting at St. Croix Music, a music store located on the North end of Main Street in downtown Stillwater. Since the store is new (only been open since March), owner Gary Brown needed some good photography of the store’s interior for use in some upcoming print ads as well as for use on his website. So this past Monday, I gathered up my gear and headed to St. Croix Music for a small commercial shoot. Not only did I capture some of the front retail part of the store, but also of the practice rooms where music lessons are taught. If you’re in the market for a new instrument, some sheet music or a lesson or two, stop on down to St. Croix Music and check them out!

Twin Cities Commercial Photography | St. Croix Music Ribbon Cutting
October 14, 2009When I first opened my studio, back in January of this year, I decided one of the first things I was going to do was join the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce. I figured this was a great way to not only get my name out in the community but also a great way to network with different businesses around the area. And just recently I’ve been asked to photograph the ribbon cuttings. What a fabulous way to meet newer businesses in the area!
Just this past weekend, I had the opportunity to photograph the ribbon cutting at St. Croix Music, a new business located on the north side of Main Street near the Staples Mill building. When I walked into the building I was greeted by smells of hot cider (perfect for the cold day!) and the sounds of a quartet of musicians jamming in the entry way. I couldn’t resist – I had to take some photos of the musicians! Then after the ribbon cutting, I got a grand tour of the music store by owner Gary Brown and took a few more photos of the store and him with his guitar.
I’m not sure if it was the fantastic music or the hospitality of the Browns but this event really warmed up a cold Saturday! If you’re in need of an instrument or lessons, definitely check out St. Croix Music in downtown Stillwater!
